Overview
As a cycle mechanic you would repair and build bikes. You would work with a wide range of cycle equipment. You would get involved in repairing e-bikes and scooters, identifying faults and completing full pre-delivery inspections as well as servicing and repairing bikes and scooters.
Activities
In your day-to-day duties you could:
- Build a new bike to a customer’s specification
- Identify problems with a bike
- Tell the customer how much it will cost to repair
- Carry out a bike service and safety check
- Carry out repairs, maintenance tasks and replace parts
- Order bike parts and keep a record of the parts in stock
- Take bookings for repairs and process paperwork
- Liaise with suppliers and dealers
- Attend cycling events to provide repairs and technical support
Organisations
You could work in a cycle workshop or at a store as an example, so mostly indoors. You could also be self employed and run your own business.
Workplace
You could start as a retail assistant in a bike shop and apply for a role as a trainee mechanic. Your employer may pay for your training.
Working Hours
42-44 hours per week, this may involve working weekends.

Salary: £20,000 – £30,000 per year.

Qualifications
You’ll usually need 2 or more GCSEs at Grades 9 to 3. However, some employers may be more flexible and look at your practical abilities. You could also apply for an apprenticeship. If you have an EHCP you may be able to apply under the DfE exemption which allows the apprentice to use Entry Level 3 English and Maths qualifications. The apprentice would have to be competent enough to successfully achieve all other aspects of the apprenticeship requirements, become occupationally competent and achieve Entry Level 3 in English and Maths before the end of their apprenticeship.
